The Longest Loving Word Prize

4 x 4-1/2 Inches hand quilting kitAfter the sneak peek email for this month went out, Kristin emailed me that she had an idea for a long term of endearment–which we all now know was Hunka-Hunka Burnin’ Love.  I think I replied to her that she might want to wait to see what the prize would be to decide if it was worth it.

And then,  life’s distractions got in my way and this giveaway prize didn’t get made in a timely fashion.

While watching the Olympics last night, I finally got around to it . . . and here it is: a small sewing kit with a beaded heart on the outside and pockets and felt on the inside. It’s a quilted, embellished copy of my well-used Moda giveaway version.

Filling the kit Double pocket Using the felt

Here’s how I fill mine: small scissors, a packet of needles and hand piecing templates in the large pocket; thimble and a spool of thread in the smaller double pocket; a few parked needles and pins stuck into the felt, with small blocks or cut pieces inside the felt pages. It works for me and I hope it will be a beautiful and useful gift for our longest phrase winner this month.

Edited to Add . . .

Even if you don’t enter the lotto this month with a long word, you can have one of these for your very own . . . I have posted a step-by-step tutorial here: My Portable Handwork Sewing Kit.

  1. I adore this! I've been looking for a pattern to make something like this…I hope no one comes up with anything longer!

  2. Yay! I'm glad to know that your Hunka' Hunka' effort may turn out to be worth it.

I'm going to post a tutorial for making this. Once I actually got around to it, it was quickly made. I think it would be fun to put a mini-block on the front or a bit of stitchery.

  3. Sophie, that is so pretty AND useful! I doubt I'll be making a longer entry, but I'm glad you'll have the tute….,it will include the beading part???? 🙂

  4. I did NOT including the beading part, but here are the basics:

Cut and fuse the heart to the background. The first beads added along the raw edge.

The rules of adding the beads were to use beading thread and whenever you add the long beads to first feel each end with your finger tip and discard anything with rough edges because it will cut the thread. Then sew through those beads individually and twice. You can string a couple of the string beads before sewing them to the fabric.
