May’s Block – Variation Rail block

Posted by on May 1, 2018 in housekeeping | 4 comments

Rail Variation block 6 1/2 inches.

This block is to use up your scraps of mid to dark blues and greens. The choice is yours as to how many squares are blue or green. *No light tone or colours please.*
Don’t worry if prints are upside down or sideways, that just adds movement to the quilt.

For 0ne Block we will need :

6 – 2 1/2 inch squares of blues and greens
1 – 6 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch rectangle of white homespun

Using a 1/4 inch seam throughout and pressing after each step.
Sew the blue and green squares together ,making 2 sets of 3 squares.
Join these together to make a rectangle of 6 squares ( 2 squares x 3 squares ).

Add the white homespun rectangle to one edge of the unit of squares.
That is it, done.

Debbie over at Stitchin Therapy has made a tutorial for this block, she has called it 2 patch, 4 patch.

Added by Sophie–just to keep all the info in one post:

  • You can make a maximum of 9 blocks in May.
  • Please add the tag Rail Variation to your posts
  • In these scrappy blocks, you can use the same solid white fabric in all your blocks and can use the blue and green fabrics in multiple blocks, but mis things up and make each block a unique combination of the blue and green fabrics.

  1. Great block! What is white homespun? Muslin? Kona cotton? Thanks for advice

  2. 2patch4patch for anyone who wants to take a look at that post.

Are we still making only 9 with this smaller block?

    • Hi susan, 9 blocks this month . Sorry I left it off the block details.

  3. Sweet. This is a busy month with the end of school year coming. Thanks!
