Welcome to the 2010 Block Lotto, the Liberated Edition
I hope that this first block for the Block Lotto this year will be an easy entry into free-style or liberated quilting for the uninitiated and a quick, fun choice for the more experienced liberated quilters among us.
I’m calling it Tic-Tac-Toe. Directions for making this block can be found here: Let’s Play Tic-Tac-Toe.
This month we’ll aim at sets of 48 blocks for our winners, with no winner receiving less than 35 blocks.
Guidelines for January
Background fabric should be a white-on-white (WOW) quilting cotton. If you make multiple blocks–as usual, you can enter up to 9 blocks–you may use the same WOW for all your blocks. For each block, you’ll start with a 7-to-10 inch square.
Feature fabric should be a BRIGHT quilting cotton. The choice of color and/or print is yours. If you make multiple blocks, each one should feature a unique bright fabric. For each block, you’ll need a strip that is 40-ish inches long (or two 20-ish inches, if you’re using FQs). It should be no narrower than 1 inch and no wider than 2.5 inches.
As you make the blocks, you’ll notice that if you are using wider strips, then you can cut the background square smaller to start. Just be sure that your resulting block is squared and trimmed to 8.5 inches and that it includes a complete Tic-tac-toe grid with 9 white spaces and that none of the spaces will be lost in the seam allowances when the blocks are assembled into a top.
Inspiration from Sneak Peekers
Here’s a small virtual quilt made from photos of some of the early blocks from sneak peekers Caroline, Debbie, Dianah, Kate, Mary Jane, Pat, Rho, Terri and me.
I love the diversity of fabrics and interpretation of these blocks, don’t you?
Awesome! This is going to be a SUPER lotto this month. Already 81 on day 1! WOW!! They're Beautiful! Thanks for putting all this together.
