Weekend Update – Share Your Process

The theme this weekend is Sharing Your Process.  Please link to a blog article that shows us some part of your quilt-making process.

FYI, I don’t necessarily mean sharing a tutorial you’ve written or some terrific tip on how to do something.  Sometimes, by transparently sharing how you do what you do, maybe sharing your frustrations, dislikes or questions about why we are taught to do something a certain way, or asking if there’s a better way  . . .  you might be surprised by the discussion that follows.

Clamping the Quilt Sandwich to the Work Table

Clamping the Quilt Sandwich to the Work Table

Earlier this week, I blogged about a project-stopping process in my quilting journey that I really do not enjoy at all–layering and pin basting a quilt. (Add any marking of quilt design and I like it even less and the top is doomed to be a UFO for a long, long, time).

How do you do what you do?  It doesn’t have to be a process you hate don’t particularly enjoy–like me and basting.

You can share your favorite part of quilting, or a clever way you do work in a small space, improvise a design wall, choose fabrics, find time to quilt, stay focused when surrounded by vendors at a quilt show …. and if you do have a great tutorial or tip to share, that’s great, too.

  1. I love this basting gun: http://www.amazon.com/Avery-Dennison-111870-Starter-Kit-642210/dp/B001CE8JPQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368227552&sr=8-1&keywords=basting+gun

Only one hole going in one side and out the other, super easy to aim the needle precisely through points or in between seams, easy to remove (hard to find the tiny piece when it goes flying, LOL).

If one fastener won’t hold, you can put two or three in before removing the gun from the fabric. Thicker quilts may need a bigger basting gun (I don’t know because I’ve never actually finished a quilt – yet), but so far I love this one.

  2. Here’s process post: http://withstringsattached.blogspot.com/2011/02/postage-stamps-and-insight-into-how-i.html
Last evening I finished quilting/binding this flimsy: http://withstringsattached.blogspot.com/2011/06/pinwheel-nine-patch.html
and basted and began quilting this one: http://withstringsattached.blogspot.com/2012/01/annual-reckoning-orca-bay-7-and-final.html

Today I am helping at a 5K run (to benefit an organization I’m involved with) and then meeting quilting friends to go to a shop’s going-out-of-business sale.

  3. When I posted the link I also wanted to comment that I didn’t know whether it quite fits the theme. But it didn’t let me do it then. Sophie, feel free to delete it. Blessings, Christa
