Can You Guess?

Can you guess what I’ve been playing with lately? (If you read the blog from a reader, you might need to come to the source and look at the header.) I’ve been wanting to play with this idea for a while, but finally sat down, pulled out some scraps and tried it in the last few days.

Before I could decide on borders for the long skinny quilt in the banner, I realized I really needed to see it there. It is the most unusual way to decide on borders for a quilt, but this long skinny quilt was pretty unusual to make in itself.

The letters are 6″ high. The space around them is meant to approximate what I was thinking about for borders, 2″ above and 4″ at each end and below (for room to add some descriptive text)

What do you think?

Edited to add that I’ve added the borders and updated the photo (although I definitely need a better lit, less skewed version).

  1. Love it Sophie! Perhaps we should all do a block with our name in it as one of the months? Tonya's instructions are really great for this and I've been meaning to have a go myeself.

  2. It is big fun. If you haven't given it a try yet, it's a lot easier, I think, than you imagine it's going to be.

These letters aren't as wonky/colorful as Tonya's . . . a couple of my goals were that they be very readable and high contrast (despite all the scrappy fabrics). As usual, choosing the scraps to use was part of the fun.

  3. Wouldn't it be neat to quilt our kids/grandkids names into a quilt for them? Or a banner for their rooms. My kids will be sharing a room soon, and something like this would be great to use to hang over their beds. Where would I find the instructions? (Not certain who Tonya is.)

  4. I think the new banner is great for our 2010 liberated block lotto. It will put us in that frame of mind.

  5. Tonya is Tonya Ricucci and here's the link to Tonya's Alphabet

  6. I love it! I've really been wanting to do more of Tonya's letters – I've done a few – and this one is great.

  7. What a clever idea, Sophie! It came out great. Can you believe it's only January 10 and there are already 149 blocks!!

  8. I like it too, but it does remind me a little of a ransom note…you know where the kidnapper cuts the letters out of newsprint to let the family know where to drop the money!

  9. I like it!

  10. Very nice!!!

  11. Looks great Sophie!

  12. Nice! I have been thinking about doing some letter blocks to use with my ABC fabric swap blocks. I figure a 3rd birthday present for Seri…in a year from now…hmmmm
