February Hearts

Hi – I’m Wendy!

I’ve been watching the block lotto for months and this month everything aligned in my life to join in. My strings were spread all over my sewing room, I was snowed in yet again, and the kids were happily entertained with something. This was a fun block, but even making 12 of them, my string bin is still just as full as ever.

I’ve been sewing since I was a child and really got the quilting bug about 10 years ago. I’m currently the coordinator for our guild comfort quilt program, so in addition to making dozens of quilts for charity each year, now I put together hundreds of kits for other guild members to sew. It’s a fun project which touches many lives. If I by chance win the lotto, it will probably end up as a comfort quilt, unless one of my kids wishes it away!

I tried something different with my leftover triangles after making the hearts … this string star was inspired by something Bonnie Hunter made, but I don’t think I’ll make more than one!

  1. Welcome Wendy! That star is really something! I'm working on a few projects using the bonus hearts, but nothing that ambitious 😉

I've added your blocks to the list (along with your last initial … because we have a couple Wendys in the group.

  2. Wendy, I really like that star! You could use it as a center for a liberated quilt! I'm sure you'll find a fun use for it.

  3. Welcome Wendy. Gorgeous star!

  4. Nice blocks – but that star is WONDERFUL!!!

  5. Welcome to our group. I love your star and agree it would make a good starting point for a liberated quilt.

  6. Thanks all for your warm welcome! I had been thinking of surrounding the star with crumb blocks for a liberated type quilt. We'll see when that makes it to the top of my list!

  7. Really terrific star! Are the directions for it available anywhere?

  8. I pulled out my 45 degree diamond template and used it with four of the heart block off-cuts sewn together. I had seen Bonnie Hunter's Out on a A String quilt, http://quiltville.com/outonastring.shtml, for inspiration.

  9. Welcome Wendy. Cool star.

  10. I absolutely ADORE your string star — very creative!!
