I tried and have one to donate
I made three in order from left to right. I think only the one on the right qualifies as spiky but, gosh, it only takes up half of the block. The other two lost most of their spikiness when I squared them up.
I tried but just can’t seem to get the hang of them and I had a lot of waste. I’ll try a few more for my QAL when I have a chance.

All three of these seem fine to me.
Cathy, they all seem fine to me, too and if they weren’t all made from the same two fabrics, I would count them all … I know this block and this technique are challenging and I think you did great. One of the “tules” of improvisation and liberated quilting is that if something is too large, you chop it off … if that eliminates a spike, we can say that the spike is implied 😉
