April 2014 Recap

April 2014 Recap

This post archives the details of the block for April 2014,  a 7-inch square (finished size)  block called Triangles in a Square, made in bright, uplifting colors with white. 41 quilters made 268 blocks, which were won by Maree, Peggy, Mariella, Julie P and Elizabeth. Two new quilters joined the Block Lotto in April.  Welcome again to Jenell (in Australia) and Nicole (in Canada). Guidelines for this month were published  here:...

The Extra Sneaky Sneak Peek for May

Since I will be at an all day quilting retreat tomorrow, held in a place with practically non-existent cell service, I just sent the May sneak peek email to everyone who has made Triangles-in-a-Square blocks and posted them this month. I’ve switched up my process a bit and sent the  sneak peek to a blind list to prevent it being hijacked for another purpose … again.  Unfortunately, this may cause your mail program to decide that...

Please Take a Look

Please Take a Look

I recently updated the page, Block Lotto Basics, to include a couple things that I realize I have been taking for granted and some other information that I may have been only including in an email message. My intent was to still keep it brief, but to cover, as the title suggests, all the basics. I would appreciate it if you would take a look and let me know if I’ve left anything out that you feel should be there or if you find anything...

And then there was Method #4

And then there was Method #4

I was making blocks for my Mod-Mod Queen-size quilt, decided to use a striped fabric for some of the Flying Geese units .. and I decided I wanted the stripe to go the same way in all the blocks, which it wouldn’t if used the 4-at-once, no-waste technique in Method #1, or made them as half-square triangles as in Method #2.  At first I thought I’d paper-piece them (Method #3 in the block directions), but it just seemed a lot faster if...

Another Way to Look At It (Postage/Block Size)

Most of the blocks we make this year will be 7 inch squares (finished size). The March block is 14 inch square which is the equivalent of FOUR 7 inch squares.  Mailing one of those in an envelope is the  size and weight equivalent of mailing FOUR 7 inch blocks, which nobody complains so loudly about. My plan was that we would make one more 14-inch block at the end of the year … but, honestly, because of all the whining about postage,...

WordPress App problems on iPad/iPhone

WordPress App problems on iPad/iPhone

Helen discovered a problem with the WordPress App for iPad.  When you try to add a post, you’ll see an error like this: If you can access our site from a browser, you’ll see it IS accessible. After a quick look around online, it looks like the issue is related to the secure connection being used by the app.  I will need to make a change (or purchase an upgrade) on the site to support the increased security in the WordPress app...

It’s TIME to mail the Star Chain blocks

It’s TIME to mail the Star Chain blocks

If you made and posted blocks in March, you should have received email from me yesterday with the mailing directions.  If you didn’t get it or found a mistake in the mailing info sheet, please let me know ASAP. Each month I ask you to mail promptly and tell you how much easier it is for me when you do so.  When I have to chase blocks, sometimes for MONTHS after they should have been mailed, it really takes a lot of the joy out of the...
