Strings mailed to Barbara, Lori, & Margaret
Strings from December were mailed today to Barbara, Lori, and Margaret from Ohio. Barbara should receive her blocks in about two days. Lori and Margaret should receive their blocks in about six business days. Happy quilting, ladies! Congrats.

If you have downloaded this month’s block pattern, you may have noticed that the second page is blank. You have also noticed that the first two pages have a landscape orientation (wide) and the rest have a portrait orientation (tall). Here’s what I was thinking. The blank page is intentional, meant to allow for those who like to print on both sides of the paper. If you don’t print on both sides, you might choose to specify the print range, something like 1, 3-4 OR use the blank page for your own notes as you make the...

Here are my four red hearts for January 2017. I made the fabric in two pieces rather than a long rectangle. This block also prompted me to get back the constructing barn blocks for OMMS. PS the background is definitely white despite the colour cast in the photo. Thanks again Sophie for a new year of Block...

If you made and posted string blocks in December, you should have received email from me with the mailing info for your blocks. I have updated the at-a-glance page with all the January information and the 38 blocks posted so far. And created my spreadsheet for tracking this year’s blocks to which quilters will be added when they post their first blocks of the year. I have also uploaded this month’s block pattern to Payhip–the pattern is offered with a “pay-what-you-want” price, which might be free or could be...

Four hearts for January. These were fun to make plus red’s my most favorite color. I love the wonky star in the center when these are put on point....

I have not made any January hearts yet, but I did finish my top using the 2016 blocks and Sophie’s Old MacDonald design. My changes included different butterflies, different spiky leaves and extra chickens and chicks … I really enjoyed making those birds, and didn’t submit any for the lotto because I wanted to keep them all. Thanks, Sophie for the cute design and a great year of...

Here are my 5 blocks for January (individually and then all together). My daughter really loves them and is hoping I win them! I am thinking about making this a rainbow scrap challenge for this year… I pretty much just pieced them like the strata block from December, just using straight pieces to create fabric in the size that Sophie suggested 5.5 X 12, I think it was… Once you have your fabric made, it takes very little time to put the block together. They are fun and you can use scraps of all sizes! Happy...

Whohoo! It’s only January 2nd and I’m already ahead of the game. Here are my nine heart blocks. I took full advantage of the sneak peek e-mailed to me in December. I like how everyone is arranging their blocks for the photo on the block lotto. There are so many setting options for this block. Check out that center block. That little navy star print square was really the center of a red chicken block for November. It didn’t meet my quality control standards because one of the paper-pieced seams didn’t get sewn...

So, here are four heart blocks from me this month – I won’t say “begin as you mean to go on” this year, as who knows whether I’ll be able to play in the lotto much this year, but I hope to hit at least a few months! I made these this morning alongside some other sewing – using the red scraps as leaders and enders and an excuse to get up and stretch my back when ironing. Because Sophie asked, I’ll also say that my technique for making my four rectangles (above) wasn’t very thrilling...

These are my four heart blocks, 2 for me and 2 to donate chances for others. I really enjoyed making them and could easily see using this for the RSC block this year – what a great quilt they would make in lots of colors!...
