Seeing Red in September

Posted by on September 1, 2016 in housekeeping | 2 comments

BarnDoor-Feature-KathieIn September, we are making 6 inch Barn Door blocks in red plus a contrasting fabric of your choice.

Barb P made this one.

You may make a maximum of 9 blocks  for chances in the drawing at the end of the month. The target set size for the winners will be 48 blocks.

Caution

Whenever we make lotto blocks from RED fabrics, it’s even more critical that every PRE-WASH their fabrics to ensure there will be no red dye bleeding in the winners quilts.  It has happened in the past–please everyone take care so that it never happens to another quilt made from lotto blocks!

Cover-ScreenShotBlock Pattern

You can find the block pattern here:

Barn Door Quilt Block Pattern

Use the coupon code 118ARZKEYQ to get the pattern free during the first 10 days of the month of September.

The pattern includes coloring pages for two quilt designs made with this block.

Fabric Guidelines

The block is made from two fabrics:

  • RED– Any solid or tone-on-tone (TOT) print or multicolor print that is predominately red and reads as red when viewed from across the room.
  • Quilter’s Choice (QC) – Any fabric of your choice. This fabric should be relatively lighter in value than your red fabric.

It is up to you to choose the color you want to combine with red and how much value contrast your two fabrics have between them. If you are unsure, take a photo and use a black & white filter to see their values.

If you make multiple blocks for the Block Lotto, you can use the same fabrics in multiple blocks as long as each 2-fabric combination is unique.

Tags and Categories

Add the tag Barn Door to all your blog posts about this block.

The category should be blocks when you are posting photos of your blocks to enter them in the drawing; use the category sent and received when you are posting about mailing or receiving blocks; and the category show and tell to share projects you make from this block (whether they are lotto blocks or blocks you make for yourself.)

The Rainbow Scraps Challenge Connection

For the Rainbow Scraps Challenge this month,  the inspiration is a rose, the color of the month is Claret with accents of gold or light green. For our lotto blocks, we are using all variations of red … with an accent color of your choice.

QAL Sampler Quilts

If you are making the Old MacDonald Mystery Sampler (OMMS) quilt, you will need 2 of these blocks in Barn colors of your choice.  The 2016 QAL page will be updated with this month’s info and updated layout to include these blocks.

If you are making blocks for the graduated sampler, you’ll need to decide how you will arrange your four blocks to fill a 12-inch square space.

The Virtual  Quilt

This month’s virtual quilt is made from blocks made by sneak peekers, Barb P, Christa, Karen B, Kathie,  Peggy and me.

  1. Looking forward to hopefully getting blocks done for this month’s lotto. love the block. Just sent my baby off to college this past month. Lost my sewing mojo for a while plus yard work takes away from sewing time.. Thanks for the great blocks.

  2. Thanks! It’s a great block, and I hope I get to make one. I’m very tempted toward making an all red and black-and-white print one on my own anyway!
