Let’s Blog About Fabric

Let’s Blog About Fabric

Lately, I’ve been thinking about my fabric stash and how little fabric I’ve had to purchase lately because I can almost always find what I need in my own fabric collection. I know some quilters that buy fabrics for a specific project and toss or give away the left-overs … but I suppose I am closer to the ladies in the cartoon. How about you?  Do you have a fabric stash?  When you start a new project, do you turn to your stash,...

Scrap-ifying the Star Chain Block

Scrap-ifying the Star Chain Block

When I made my blocks for the lotto, I started thinking about making a quilt from these blocks in scrappy greens which led me to start thinking about the ways to make the block scrappy. The easiest, most straightforward approach would be to cut the background fabrics from different greens. You could also make it more scrappy by making the large 4 1/2 by 6 1/2-inch rectangles from two or more pieces. You could look at the block differently and...

Do you have any tips for making Quarter-Square Triangles?

Someone emailed me yesterday and asked for help making the Quarter-square Triangles (QST) that form the points for the star center in this month’s block.   She was cutting them larger and trimming to size and kept ending up with points that were a little unequal. I realized that the main reason that I, personally, usually do NOT cut larger when making these is because trimming them to size can be fiddly because you have to make sure the...

Updated Block Pattern for Oak Leaf (in 6 Sizes)

If you follow my personal blog, Sophie Junction, then you know I’ve been making an Oak Leaf Block of the month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Here are my blocks for January through March, in scrappy blues, pinks and teals. My blocks are 10 x 15 inches–not one of the four sizes for which I had measurements for cutting. Mostly so that I don’t have to remember or think about it each month, I added that size to the chart at the end of...

Let’s Blog About Spring (or Fall)

Let’s Blog About Spring (or Fall)

As soon as I see March on the horizon, I start thinking about the arrival of Spring. And Spring makes me think about wildflowers blooming, fresh asparagus, packing away my wool sweaters and unpacking linen and silk clothing, gardening and new inspiration for quilts. I put together this mosaic of images from Flickr of some of the things I think of, when I think Spring. 1. Spring Fantasy, 2. Sure sign of Spring – Robin – Bird, 3....

My proposed colour way for mod mod-full

My proposed colour way for mod mod-full

I’d love some input here from those with experience-  do you feel the cream TOT as background will make this too bright and in your face?  Do you think a darker background would work better ie. a cardboardy tone beige? My Fabrics are pretty bright. I want to start sewing and I really need to get cutting but, I am not experienced and I am hesitating here…sometimes that is a red flag for me so I thought I’d put it out...
