Scrappy Mod Module 1
Greetings!
As a newbie at Block Lotto, I am learning the ins and outs of posting/
sharing. So after seeing someone post the first module, I assembled three to share.
My Mod Mod QAL blocks are made from my fabric stash. I have resolved NOT to buy fabric. So this will definitely be a scrappy quilt.

Updated Block Pattern for Oak Leaf (in 6 Sizes)
If you follow my personal blog, Sophie Junction, then you know I’ve been making an Oak Leaf Block of the month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Here are my blocks for January through March, in scrappy blues, pinks and teals.
My blocks are 10 x 15 inches–not one of the four sizes for which I had measurements for cutting. Mostly so that I don’t have to remember or think about it each month, I added that size to the chart at the end of the directions. Since I also keep thinking it would be interesting to make the scrappy version of these leaves from charm packs, I added those measurements, too. If you start with 5 inch charms and make 4 inch (finished size) half-square triangles from them, you’ll make a 16 x 24 inch Oak Leaf block. A couple blocks could make a baby quilt for a kid with nature-loving parents.
You can download the updated block pattern here:
Mod-Module #1
Here’s my first Module completed. I think its really interesting to see everyone’s color choices for their quilts. They are all so different!
One for my sampler
I want to make the sampler this year and practice mod piecing and colorways, but I’m short of time these days, so I’m keeping this one. If things settle down, I’ll try to do another one to add to the numbers. It was an easy block, Sophie. Your directions are excellent.
Mod Mod QAL – Definitely NOT Low Volume but very LOUD.
I made the star chain blocks for my MOD MOD QAL queen-sized quilt. Blocks are all made from scraps in complementary colors. If the block takes more than 2 colors then I’m using black for a third color.
I don’t have a design wall so pinned a paper to the modules to designate row and column placement of modules in the overall quilt so I don’t forget what I’m doing as months go by. (Well, I might just forget anyway and wonder what those papers mean).

Let’s Blog About Spring (or Fall)
As soon as I see March on the horizon, I start thinking about the arrival of Spring. And Spring makes me think about wildflowers blooming, fresh asparagus, packing away my wool sweaters and unpacking linen and silk clothing, gardening and new inspiration for quilts.
I put together this mosaic of images from Flickr of some of the things I think of, when I think Spring.
1. Spring Fantasy, 2. Sure sign of Spring – Robin – Bird, 3. Asparagus, 4. Asparagus Soup, 5. IMG_1828, 6. BEE, 7. Stonnington Spring Fashion Runway 2010 _ Alannah Hill _ IMG_6425, 8. Bloom where you are planted, 9. Blue Bonnets & Firewheels
Blog about the upcoming new season–Spring for most of us, Fall for some of us–and add your link in the Linky Tool below.
My February Mod-Mod blocks
I’m going to find it hard to wait for each month’s blocks to come out so that I can continue with my Mod-Mod throw. I love this month’s blocks. Thanks Sophie.
My proposed colour way for mod mod-full
I’d love some input here from those with experience- do you feel
the cream TOT as background will make this too bright and in your face? Do you think a darker background would work better ie. a cardboardy tone beige? My Fabrics are pretty bright. I want to start sewing and I really need to get cutting but, I am not experienced and I am hesitating here…sometimes that is a red flag for me so I thought I’d put it out there and just ask for opinions.
Sophie’s Bead Factory and Sampler Update
It feels a little like a Bead (block) Factory in my sewing room lately. Here are my 27 Bead-on-a-String blocks for the Block Lotto and two Mod-Mod samplers.
Most were made using the 6-minute circle technique … though I can’t say I finished any of them in 6 minutes, it definitely got faster/easier as I made them.
Most of the bead blocks will be adjacent to a double chevron block in the quilt. Here’s how my combined sampler blocks look so far. First the throw-size, made using the color of the month from the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. For these, the beads are made from a single fabric.
And these are the blocks for the Full/Queen size bed quilt so far. There’s one extra bead block there–it will likely become part of a pillow cover.
Beads for My Sampler
I have my 13 bead blocks made for the Full/Queen sized Mod Mod QAL. I needed 4 strings of 3 beads plus a single bead. I’m using scraps and making blocks in complementary colors. I think this will be one wild quilt! It is so loud it may keep someone awake at night.
