More inspiration for I-Spy neighborhood
This is a quilt from Wendy Vosters’ “Fanciful Quilts to Paper Piece”. This is kind of what I had in mind for a I-Spy play quilt that you could drive matchbox size cars on. I would add trees and some fun places to visit like a park or lake or maybe even an off road RV area with hills you can drive your cars on. I would make it larger than this one so several kids could play at a time. Anyone have any other ideas??? ;o) I’m going to draft something up so I can remember what I’m thinking…(ya might know what it’s like when ya hit the 60 somethings) LOL
Weekend Update – August 2-5
I can’t believe it’s already August … and another Friday is here and time for the Weekend Update Linky Party. Share a link from your blog below.
This weekend, I’ll be deciding upon a project to make my focus for August. Will I pull out an old UFO to finish or pick up the shiny new giant geese blocks I’ve been making for my Daily Feather project? Decisions, decisions …
FYI, the topic weekend for August will be in TWO WEEKS and the topic is, “How did you become a quilter?”
A Gentle Reminder
My intent for the block lotto is that quilters may:
- Try something new, whether it’s a new block pattern, a new-to-them technique or a different color-way
- Win a set of blocks made by the block lotto community or be inspired by a block to make more of their own
- Have fun in a no-commitment activity that takes a minimal amount of time
- ALWAYS send blocks that are the type that they would like to receive and that will be usable by the winners that receive them
This gentle reminder is about the last item on the list.
None of the blocks this year take that long to make, so I expect them to be made with care, from carefully measuring and cutting the fabrics, to checking that your seams are in the neighborhood of 1/4 inch, to pressing those seems along the way, to ensure that everything goes together well.
From it’s beginning, the Block Lotto was intended to be beginner friendly and that is still the case. There is some leeway, always, especially because some of us are trying new things. It is the reason that there is some leeway on the size of the blocks, which may be up to 1/4 inch smaller to 1/4 inch larger.
But please don’t interpret “beginner friendly” as a reason to make sloppy blocks with puckers and pleats and seam allowances so small that the seams won’t hold and the blocks cannot be used.
I encourage the winners to send feedback to me on the quality of blocks they receive. And I do wonder if some of us are really sending blocks like we would expect to receive if we won.
I hate to have to remind everyone, because I think MOST of us do the best we can, month after month. And I want you to know I really do appreciate it. But everyone else seems to need a reminder from time to time and this is it.
Weekend Update – July 26-29
I have fighting with the Linky Tool off and on all day long today … but it finally produced the entry we need for this week’s Weekend Update.
Please share a link below from your blog. Share a project, a rant, a recipe, a vacation travel log ….
More Setting Ideas
I’m sharing this in-progress photo of Brenda’s Housing Development, with her permission, because I think there are some great setting ideas for our I-spy house blocks here.
Something else you could use these blocks for is a pillow … like the Holiday Lane pillow that I made last year that inspired the idea of this month’s block.
Weekend Update
I have been distracted by life too much this week and will be spending part of my weekend playing catch-up with Block Lotto tasks … I also hope to find time to run out for some batting so I can start quilting this crib quilt made from bird, house and flying geese blocks.
How about you?
Share a link below on any topic. For me, the best part of reading quilter’s blogs is getting those “slice of life” glimpses that blogs reveal.
Weekend Update – Share the Best (or Worst)
This month, the topic is Best/Worst or Good News/Bad News. Feel free to interpret this as you like. Some possibilities:
- a bad new/good news quilting experience of a quilt-gone wrong which, when finished, was even better than you planned?
- the thing you like BEST about quilting
- the worst thing about quilting for you
- the best/worst events of the week for you
Add your link below. The linky tool will be open to add links through Monday.
I’m Back….
Another wedding is past. Wedding quilt form my daughter who married last year was finished just a bit past their 1st anniversary, but I did have to make a baby quilt for their honeymoon baby, Patrick who is now 5 months old. Life has calmed down a bit and I hope to get back into lotto blocks and making more quilts. I am also trying to get a long arm quilting business started, but I do want to still make time for piecing.
A Setting Idea from a Commercial Pattern
I saw a photo of this quilt on a fabric company’s site and thought … setting idea.
You could add black strips to each side of our blocks and put them together in a straight set for a similar effect to Aardvark Quilts’ Domiciles.
If you needed additional blocks, you could make some smaller houses and put them together as 4-patches like the ones in this quilt pattern.
