Why I have no May block entries
My daughter’s wedding dress. I snapped a few pictures when she put it on to show her sister and father. This is the top for the reception. For the ceremony she will have a long sleeved half-tee rather than the sleeveless. Not the greatest pictures either. There are about 870 3mm Swarovski crystals (clearAB) scattered throught the skirt. The ribbon sash is silver satin. I hope no one minds me posting this…I am really pleased with the dress and just wanted to show it off somewhere where the groom won’t see it!
Send March Blocks to Julie Post
Congratulations Julie on winning the Block Lotto for March. The 4 blocks I made are on the way to you. Can’t wait to see the lovely quilt you’ll make.
Thrilled to be a winner
To all of you who are sending me blocks, thank you! I am travelling so will not be able to see your beautiful blocks until Memorial day weekend when I get back. I promise I will post to let you know which ones have arrived as soon as I can.
Flooded with requests from Facebookers
A couple of days ago, on a quilt shop’s Facebook page, they shared a link to the (old) Block Lotto blog–to the guidelines post for the African Violets we made last August. This block was made by Caroline.
That post, imported to this site and can be found here:
Apparently the virtual quilt made quite an impression because email for requests for accessing the pattern (via Google docs) have been flooding my mailbox.
Personally, I think it’s the power of the scrappy quilt–all the wonderful fabrics chosen by you combined to make a visually interesting virtual quilt that is pretty hard to resist.
The timing isn’t good, but it is a good reminder of my plan to polish up some of the block pattern directions I’ve created, remove the Block Lotto specifics and make them available. In the meantime, I wanted to share the news of our popularity and welcome any newbies who found us via Facebook and would like to join the fun.
I am one of the few who does not have a Facebook account–mostly because I know I already spend too much time in front of a computer. But it does make me wonder (again) if the Block Lotto should have a fan page there?
progress on 9-patch HST’s
I have been slowly working on assembly of the 9-patch blocks ( I am making 16 more blocks to make mine 8×8 blocks). Some of the blocks I received had some off-white, so I used some off-white on the blocks that I’m making to tie it together. I’m liking this a LOT! I think that this quilt is telling me that it wants flannel backing and to be yarn-tied instead of quilted and with a loftier batting than I normally use so it’s warm and cozy 🙂 I have some rainbow blanket binding from my grandmother’s stash (that wide silky stuff that I bet a lot of us had baby blankets with it) that I might use to bind it too, that would be fun 🙂
9-patch HST’s layout
This is how I’ve decided to assemble my block lotto blocks. I also decided to make 16 more blocks so I can have an 8×8 block layout. I decided against using sashing. I will do a narrow border in white and bind it in red 🙂
5 hot crossed 9 patches
5 from me, #6 met an untimely death when the ruler slipped as I was squaring the blocks 🙁
possible 9-patch HST layout
This is one of the options I’m considering for the layout of my 48 HST blocks – this would make a 68×90 quilt with 2 1/2” sashing and extra border….. I’d love to see others ideas for layouts!

I liked the triangles added to the border–an idea that would work with our scrappy blocks, too.
